Wearable Skin-like Optoelectronic Systems for Biomedical Application

Abstract
Wearable skin-like optoelectronics, built-in thin-film semiconductors with plastic substrates, offer a range of unprecedented opportunities for widespread applications due to naturally conformal and compatibility with unusual geometries, such as the human skins or rollable substrates. The better interface to the human skin allows such optoelectronics to improve the quality of human life and develop a route for biomedical application.

In this talk, I will introduce the current works on wearable skin-like optoelectronics, including structure designs, fabrication, and biomedical applications. The mechanical and optical analysis for designing high-performance, flexible and stretchable inorganic semiconductors are described. Then advances in transfer printing techniques via droplet stamps are examined for efficiently fabricating skin-like optoelectronics. The applications for monitoring human blood oxygen saturation and blood pressure are demonstrated via clinical experiments. The results are compared with the golden standard acquired by invasive (intra-arterial) blood pressure (IBP) monitoring for more than 1500 minutes on 44 subjects in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The maximum absolute errors of diastolic and systolic blood pressure are ±7/±10 mmHg respectively in immobilized, and ±10/±14 mmHg in walking scenarios, respectively.

 

Biography
Professor FENG Xue received Ph.D. degree in solid mechanics from Tsinghua University in 2003 and then worked as a postdoc at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) during 2004 to 2007. From 2005 to 2006, he also worked as a postdoc at California Institute of Technology. He joined Tsinghua University in 2007. Now he is a professor in the School of Aerospace Engineering of Tsinghua University, the chief scientist of Qiantang Science & Technology Innovation Center, the director of the Center for Flexible Electronics Technology of Tsinghua University, the director of the Institute of Flexible Electronics Technology of Tsinghua, Zhejiang and the director of The Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Applied Mechanics. Prof. Feng served or is currently serving as an editor / co-editor of several journals, including ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics, Flexible and Printed Electronics of IOPscience, npj Flexible Electronics, SCIENTIA SINICA Technological of Science China Press, et al.

His research interests focus on flexible electronics technology, the research aims at developing bio-inspired stretchable and flexible electronic devices and exploring the applications for bio-medicine, engineering and industry. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers on Nat. Mater., Sci. Adv., PNAS, Adv. Mater., J. Mech. Phys. Solids, IEEE Electr. Dev. Lett., J. Appl. Phys. and 2 papers on IEEE IEDM. Over 140 patents and 9 software copyrights have been granted.
