The Australian Government's Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security is at the forefront of Australia’s effort to advance the One Health approach internationally with a specific focus on the Indo Pacific region. Established in 2017 and housed within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Centre contributes to the avoidance and containment of infectious disease threats with the potential to cause social and economic harms on a national, regional or global scale. The Centre manages Australia’s investments in country and regional projects in the Pacific and Southeast Asia support the strengthening of health information systems; disease surveillance and modelling; infection prevention and control, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR); vector surveillance and control; emergency operations; laboratory capacity; and workforces. The Weapons Threat Reduction Program (WTRP), Canada’s contribution to the G7-led Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction is a leader in building global capacity to prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease threats. The WTRP is assisting dozens of countries and international/regional organisations to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity for pathogens of security concern, enhance surveillance and diagnostic capabilities and improve capacities to mitigate biological threats. WTRP programming is guided by the GP’s Biosecurity Deliverables, which were developed under Canada’s 2010 G7 presidency and renewed during Canada’s 2018 presidency. These provide the parameters for coordinated action by GP members to:

1. secure and account for dangerous pathogens;
2. prevent deliberate misuse of pathogens;
3. enhance regional surveillance networks;
4. reinforce biological non-proliferation instruments; and
5. promote responsible conduct in biological sciences.

WTRP initiatives demonstrated their impact throughout the pandemic and supported the global response to COVID-19. This included biocontainment laboratories in the Caribbean, Ghana, Jordan, Nigeria, and South Africa, the ASEAN Emergency Operations Center Network and the ASEAN BioDiaspora Virtual Centre.

Canada’s WTRP is a leading contributor to the GP’s Signature Initiative to Mitigate Biological Threats in Africa and is committed to identifying new partnerships and innovations to strengthen global health security.
