  • Since 1996: President of the ICFMH of the IUMS (International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene of the International Union of Microbiological Societies).
  • Since 1986: Member of the IUMS (International Union of Microbiological Societies) Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus and related organisms.

Teaching: Around 40 years experience in teaching and research in basic and various fields of applied microbiology, including Food Microbiology, Food Hygiene and Industrial Microbiology.

Major Research Interests: Lactic acid bacteria, probiotics, food microbiology, food safety and food biotechnology, gut microbiota.

Publications: around 325 scientific papers, 69 book chapters; editor/co-editor of 8 scientific textbooks.
