Abstract Content

Infectious diseases of zoonotic origin account for 70% of the increase in infectious disease worldwide. The pathogenic agents include bacteria, parasites, fungi, viruses and prions. These emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases have threatened social and economic systems not only nationally but also globally as was evident with SARS and Influenza Viruses. The emergence of infections of zoonotic origin involve multifactorial changes in human behavior, farming and trading practices, vector distribution, ecological and climate conditions and microbial genetics.

Asia is the home to over 50% of the global population and has some of the most densely populated areas of the world undergoing rapid economic growth. Vulnerabilities and factors driving the increase in zoonotic infectious diseases are prevalent in these countries with pressures from: population growth, urbanization, migration and increasing cross boundary flows of people, goods and livestock; farming and trading practices and food safety: and deforestation and climate change.

One Health strategies at the interface of human, animal both domestic and wild, vector and the ecosystem is critical for effective surveillance and response and prevention and control of zoonotic diseases. Collaboration of diverse sectors, multiple disciplines and local, national and global governments and organizations is necessary for success.
