The essential oil of Citrus grandis peel oil (CGPO) were encapsulated with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and benzalkonium chloride (BKC) using interfacial precipitation chemistry and then formulated into lotion form to produce a topical repellent product. Non-encapsulated essential oil also was prepared in the similar formulation for comparison purpose. Both lotion formulation were then stored in different storage conditions; 250C ± 20C/60% ± 5% relative humidity (RH) and 400C ± 20C/75% ± 5% RH for over 12 months period. At one month, six months and 12 months of storage period, the physical stability and efficacy were assessed. At 250C storage condition and after 12 months of storage period, microencapsulated formulation showed insignificant changes in droplet size, zeta potential and pH value. At 400C storage condition however, both formulations demonstrated instability. Efficacy study indicated that microencapsulated formulation possessed better repellency effects against mosquito bite where > 80% protection was sustained for 4 hours post application. In conclusion, at 400C storage condition both formulations became unstable, but at 250C storage condition microencapsulated formulation improved the physical stability of CGPO- based repellent and helps preserve the effectiveness of the formulation up to 12 months of storage period.
