Abstract Content

A study was carried out on the presence of ectoparasites in 208 pet cats around Ipoh. Samples were collected from 103 male and 105 female cats of 3 months to ˃ 10 years old. Fur samples from cats were collected using pet steel toothed comb and preserved in vials containing 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH). The results from microscopic examination of samples shows 42 cats were positive for Ctenoephalides felis felis fleas (20.2%), 31 cats positive for Felicola subrostratus lice (14.9%), 53 cats positive for 3 types of mites Lynxacarus radovskyi (18.8%), Notoedres cati (3.8%) and Cheyletiella spp. (2.9%). These ectoparasite infestations causes poor hair coat, increased skin scurf, pruritus and anemia to the pets. From the survey 86% of these cats were kept indoors. Most infections are zoonotic and can cause itchy red spots and crusts on human skin when in close contact with infected animals. Control of these infestations include treatment of the cat's environment, regular checks by the veterinarian and awareness on the common cat parasites.
