What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize during your talk in Singapore?

Prof Wim TEUGHELS Reflects on ISAPP's First Meeting in Asia

This month we feature Prof Wim TEUGHELS in our Spotlight for the 2018 ISAPP meeting in Singapore.

What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize during your talk in Singapore?
Wim: My talk will be focusing on 2 aspects. First of all, I would like to introduce the oral cavity and oral diseases as a fascinating emerging domain for probiotic and prebiotic therapies. By summarizing and putting into perspective some of the major findings within this field, I hope to make more researchers and industry partners interested in also looking at the oral cavity. Whereas probiotics for oral health are being used today in patients, prebiotics for oral health are hardly explored. During the second part of the lecture, I will be sharing the first in vitro data on prebiotics for oral health.

Prof Patrice CANI Reflects on ISAPP's First Meeting in Asia

This month we feature Prof Patrice CANI in our Spotlight for the 2018 ISAPP meeting in Singapore.

What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize during your talk in Singapore?
Patrice: I will summarize 10 years of research on Akkermansia muciniphila and I will present an overview on the data showing an impact of Akkermansia on health, with a balanced view according to different situations. I will include how we moved from the bench to the bedside, what are the current development and strategies for such next generation beneficial microbe. I will also highlight the very few first results obtained in a human pilot study. .

Dr Jetty Chung-Yung LEE  Reflects on ISAPP's First Meeting in Asia

This month we feature Dr. Jetty Chung-Yung LEE in our Spotlight for the 2018 ISAPP meeting in Singapore.

What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize during your talk in Singapore?
Lee: There have been reports on the health benefits of short chain fatty acids (SCFA). Pro- and pre-biotics in the diet appear to aid in the production of SCFA. The link to SCFA in lipid metabolism and/or its transportation remains unclear and needs to be validated.

Prof Yuan Kun LEE  Reflects on ISAPP's First Meeting in Asia

This month we feature Prof Yuan Kun LEE in our Spotlight for the 2018 ISAPP meeting in Singapore.

What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize during your talk in Singapore?
Lee: To answer the question on which groups of microbiota are determined by diet (which dietary components) and which by host genes. For this would provide foundation for modulation of microbiome for health and treatment of diseases, and to achieve optimal efficacy for probiotic/prebiotic administration

Prof. Mi Mi TANG Reflects on ISAPP's First Meeting in Asia

This month we feature Prof. Mi Mi TANG in our Spotlight for the 2018 ISAPP meeting in Singapore.

What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize during your talk in Singapore?
Tang: We have been applying a probiotic as an immune response modifier, combining it together with allergen oral immunotherapy, to treat food allergy. I will be describing our groundbreaking work testing a combination probiotic and peanut oral immunotherapy for the treatment of peanut allergy in children. Findings from our world first randomised trial will be presented. The novel probiotic immunotherapy treatment resulted in the highest rates of sustained unresponsiveness/tolerance reported for any food allergy treatment in development and provided improved quality of life. These beneficial effects were maintained years after treatment.

Prof. Gregor REID Reflects on ISAPP's First Meeting in Asia

This month we feature Prof. Gregor Reid in our Spotlight for the 2018 ISAPP meeting in Singapore.

What new developments in the probiotic/prebiotic field do you plan to emphasize?
Reid: As humans continue to pollute the planet, the ability of microbes to degrade chemicals in the environment continues to be important. Now, their application to humans is an interesting emerging field.
