In 2020, the lives of billions of people changed drastically as the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) outbreaks spread all over the world, causing panic due to the unknown. And the unknow quickly turned into an unprecedent massive flow of health-related information on the news. As the new disease COVID-19 took over, the need for reliable, clear, honest, and valid information also grew. As the pandemic surged, it has been established that well-informed people are key to disease prevention, and also a mandatory factor in saving lives and fighting the disease. However, is the information given linguistically accessible, or simple enough, to people who have never attended a medical or nursing school? As data collected throughout 2020 in Brazil (media and Brazilian health government agencies) indicate, the information made available to common readers, who do not have specialized knowledge on the matter, is far beyond their comprehension capabilities. And if linguistically accessible information is essential anywhere in the world, in developing countries, where poverty is an important factor contributing to low-literacy rates (when a person cannot use reading, writing, and calculation skills for their own and the community’s development) and very limited Health Literacy, simpler, clear, unambiguous, consistent, and accessible information is taken to a whole new level when it comes to disease prevention. In this scenario, we have created MedSimples (http://www.ufrgs.br/textecc/acessibilidade/page/cartilha/), an online writing assistant that helps promote Health Literacy by simplifying health-related texts available online or created by users for a specified target audience or for the users’ own understanding. It combines NPL, Corpus Linguistics, and General Linguistic Studies to identify complex words and terms from the healthcare domain and offers suggestions of simplifications or explanations that can be integrated into the original text. Currently, MedSimples contemplates 3 different modules, COVID-19, Parkinson’s Disease, and Pediatrics. The COVID-19 core term base, as well as related subareas, is currently being expanded, and the Cancer (Oncology) and Mouth Cancer (Stomatology) modules are to be implemented soon.
