Abstract Content (abstracts should be written in Size 11 font, Arial font style) Introduction/Background/Problem Heart disease and stroke, cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) cause tens of millions of deaths per year. Obesity is linked to poor health outcomes, increasing the likelihood of developing NCDs. According to the World Health Organisation (2016), 1.9 billion people will remain at risk from the poor health outcomes associated with overweight and obesity. The Health Promotion Administration warns that the number of Taiwanese considered to be overweight, or with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 24, has grown from 32.7 percent between 1993 to 1996 to a shockingly high 45.4 percent between 2013 to 2016. Description of Objectives/Methods/Intervention The main purpose of this study is to expore the impact of health literacy through Diet Scorecard weight reduction program on outpatient obesity. 30 subjects were engaged in this program. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 24 and paired t-test.
Results (effects/impact/changes) The results show that the Diet Scorecard tool improves weight reduction by as much as 6.0kg (p<0.001). Overall, mean body weight decreased from 85.7kg (BMI 32.5± 4.6) to 79.7kg (BMI 30.2± 4.6). Moderate weight loss (5–10%) can bring health benefits for obesity. It was found that 67% of the participants who had lost ≥ 5% of their initial body weight after intervention.
Discussions/Conclusions/Lessons learned A significant weight reduction was found through the Diet Scorecard weight reduction program. Further study is needed to investigate the long-term effects of the strategy on lifestyle improvement related to weight loss. |
