Background

Low health literacy is a significant problem in today’s society. A crucial strategy towards providing health literate services involves building the capacity of health professionals. Efforts to enhance awareness of health literacy concepts in health professional education in Taiwan involves building the competencies of frontline community health professionals.

Methods

We developed an interactive, online health literacy training program targeted at community health professionals. Participants were recruited from public health centers with various health-related employment backgrounds. The 4-week training curriculum included pre-recorded informational videos and a 90-minute synchronous, in-person, team-based learning.

Results

A total of 15 public health centers and 69 participants completed the training program successfully. Readiness assurance scores means tested 53.9 ~ 61.6 (maximum score: 100) individually, and 75.8 ~ 85.8 (maximum score: 100) as a group. Participants felt they benefited from the intervention. They reported the highest satisfaction with the flexibility of online learning (mean score ranging from 4.12 ±.65 to 4.36 ±.62).

Conclusions

Study findings suggest online team-based learning approaches is a feasible method to improve health literacy training for community health professionals. Widespread adoption of the online health literacy training program could strengthen the capacities of the public health workforce to incorporate health literacy concepts in designing health services.
