Abstract Content (abstracts should be written in Size 11 font, Arial font style) [Objective] Health education leaflet is a common medium for health communication between doctors and patients. However, the current health education leaflet on application procedures for assistive devices is rarely used in rehabilitation medicine, which is, after investigation, ascribable to the fact that the current version contains too much text and complicated content, rendering it unsuitable for patients with literacy difficulty. The aforementioned reasons have reduced the willingness of occupational therapists to use leaflet, which has in turn reduced health communication efficacy. This study aims to improve the current health education leaflet and thereby increase occupational therapists’ willingness to use leaflet and improve health communication efficacy. [Method] This study adopted a pretest-posttest design to study the feedback of occupational therapists before and after the revision of health education leaflet for application procedures regarding assistive devices. According to occupational therapists’ feedback, the new health education leaflet on application procedure for assistive devices reduced the text and increased figures for illustration. Occupational therapists in rehabilitation medicine were recruited as participants. A 5-point Likert scale was employed as the evaluation method to rate 10 questions, with the maximum points for each question and for the total score being 5 and 50, respectively; the higher the score, the more satisfied the occupational therapist with the leaflet. [Results] A total of 8 occupational therapists were surveyed, and they had a mean of 9.85 years in practice. Their mean total satisfaction score increased from 29.9 ± 8.3 before the revision to 45.3 ± 4.1 (p < 0.05) after the revision. Their willingness to use also increased significantly after the revision, from a mean score of 2.9 ± 1.2 to 4.8 ± 0.5 (p < 0.05). [Conclusion] Results of this study revealed that the new health education leaflet on application procedure for assistive devices aligns with current clinical needs. By increasing the willingness of occupational therapists to use leaflet, we hope to improve health communication efficacy, improve patients’ well-being, and achieve shared decision making between doctors and patients. |
