Background:
The long waiting time in line to pay for medical expenses after seeing a doctor in the hospital is one of the most disturbing issues for outpatients in Taiwan. Solving this problem with electronic payments (EP) is a hot topic in recent years. But whether the public accepts the application of this emerging technology has not yet been discussed.
Purpose:
This study explored the acceptance and factors affecting the use of EP for people after seeking medical treatment at the outpatient department by the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model.
Methods:
We developed a Likert 5-points scoring 22 items questionnaire based on the UTAUT model. From August 14th to September 17th, 2019, the survey was conducted in randomized and anonymous ways for people over 20 years old who need to pay for medical expenses at a tertiary medical center in southern Taiwan. Cronbach α, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test, correlation, and regression analysis were performed by IBM SPSS 24.0 software.
Results:
A total of 311 questionnaires were collected. Among the respondents, aged 45-54 (27.97%), female (55.9%), college graduated (48.2%), and retired/housekeeping (32.2%) took for the most percentage. Using the system increases productivity (performance expectancy), learning to operate the system is easy (effort expectancy), and the organization supporting the use of the system (social influence) has positive effects on using intention. (All P-value < 0.001) Having the resources necessary to use the system and a specific person available for assistance (facilitating conditions), past experience and behavior intentions have positive effects on user behaviors. (All P-value < 0.001)
Conclusion:
People agreed that EP has become the trend of medical expenses pay and can shorten the waiting time in the hospital. A friendly operation interface is the focus of the design. It is the key to have a person for the guide at the site. The medical organization should support the resources necessary for promotion.
