Background and Rationale The research on microorganism of probiotics origin has gained attention worldwide. Research observations advise that probiotic microorganisms may have a vital role in declining the antibiotic-related diarrhoea, vaginal candidiasis, immunomodulation, and urinary tract infections. Biosurfactants production is not considered as a probiotic trait, in contrast to other traits, it is often considered a feature that is desirable, rather than a key probiotic trait. Biosurfactants producing LAB showed various probiotic traits as stated above. As multifunctional potential, biosurfactants producing LAB should be a point of discussion for their inclusion as a probiotic trait to strengthen the future strains selection. |
Objectives: Indicates the purpose of the study The objective of the present study was to assess the potential of the lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented foods for biosurfactants production. The probiotic potential of the biosurfactants was evaluated under various physiological conditions. |
Methodology: Describe pertinent experimental procedures Biosurfactants producing LAB were isolated from indigenous fermented foods collected locally. All the identified culture were screened and quantified for biosurfactants production. The biosurfactants production was carried out at laboratory scale bioreactor in whey based medium. Furthermore the biosurfactants was partially purified and analyzed for structural attributes. |
Results: Summarize the results of the research Biosurfactants producing LAB has been characterized and cultivated at bioreactor scale. Purified biosurfactants was characterized as glycolipid molecule. The biosurfactants was found antimicrobial to various human pathogens, antiadhesive to biofilm forming pathogens, and biosurfactants was found effective at low pH, hydrolyzing bile salt and resistant to intestinal enzymes. |
Conclusions: State the main conclusions The pilot study provided early evidence that biosurfactants of LAB showed probiotic traits and non-toxic to the animal cell lines. Further precise studies remain to be elucidated. The findings of the studies encouraged for further exploration of this mechanism. |
